River Sweep Poster Contest Information

RIVER SWEEP is a one-day cleanup project for the Ohio River that covers more than 3,000 miles of shoreline in six states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Thousands of volunteers participate in the event, collecting more than 20,000 tons of trash and debris. Trash collected over the years has included stolen cars, tires, furniture, toys, a wedding dress, a piano, appliances, and much more. All trash collected is either recycled or placed in approved landfills.

THE POSTER CONTEST is open to schools bordering the Ohio River and its tributaries to create an awareness of the problem caused by litter in our rivers and streams.  Students in primary and secondary schools (public, private, and home school; K - 12) are invited to design posters for River Sweep event each year. The contest is conducted on an annual basis; students must submit their artwork by mid-December and designs are judged in January.

Posters should reflect the positive outcome of pollution awareness and focus on encouraging volunteer participation in the cleanup.

PRIZES will be awarded, including two $500 United States Savings Bonds. The end result...we will all be winners with cleaner rivers and streams!

RIVER SWEEP is sponsored by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) in partnership with Ohio River businesses and industries. Other participating agencies include: Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, Kentucky Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Cabinet, Kentucky River Authority, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, and West Virginia Make it Shine Program.

CONTEST RULES
1. The poster contest is open to any student (K - 12) who lives or attends school in a county along the Ohio River from Pittsburgh, PA to Cairo, IL or a student whose county participates in the River Sweep (includes counties along the Allegheny, Beaver, Monongahela, and Kentucky Rivers that participate in the River Sweep).

2. Posters should be no larger than 18 x 24 inches and no smaller than 9 x 12 inches. Only flat artwork is accepted. DO NOT FOLD OR ROLL POSTERS and DO NOT USE GLITTER!!!

3. All entries must be mailed or shipped to:

All entries must be postmarked by DECEMBER 16^th and winners will be notified in January. Only one entry per student.

4. Attach an official entry label to the back of each entry. Each label MUST be filled out in its entirety! Please WRITE LEGIBLY!

5. An official entry form is attached to the rules and regulations and may be copied if necessary.

6. All entries become property of the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission and the River Sweep and WILL NOT be returned.

7. Only original artwork will be accepted. Artwork may be modified to suit poster format.

COMPUTER GENERATED ARTWORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

Prizes:
Grand Prize: $500 US Savings Bond
T-shirt Design Winner: $500 US Savings Bond
13 Runner Up Awards (one in each grade level): $50 US Savings Bond.

*In addition, $100 will be awarded to the school art department of the grand prize winner!

TIP: Entries should focus on artwork instead of wordings or slogans.  Please keep the theme positive!
