The Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Watershed Nutrient Task Force was formed in 1997 and currently consists of 5 federal agencies and 10 state agencies with two other states joining in the near future. The Task Force developed an Action Plan for Reducing, Mitigating, and Controlling Hypoxia in the Northern Gulf of Mexico in 2001. This Action Plan identified 3 long term goals (the Coastal Goad, the Within Basin Goal, and the Quality of Life Goal), with 11 short term actions identified as being needed to achieve the long term goals. Action #2 calls for the forming of sub-basin committees to coordinate implementation of the Action Plan.
Under this guidance ORSANCO convened the Ohio River Sub Basin Steering Committee in 2002. The Steering Committee is made up representatives from the state agriculture and/or environmental agencies of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, and Tennessee. Links to these agencies are below.
