ORSANCO is always looking for new RiverWatchers to assist in monitoring the Ohio River and its tributaries. RiverWatchers participants commit to monitoring their site at least five times each year and submitting that data to ORSANCO. For teachers and students, the program offers a unique opportunity to practice “real world” science. For concerned citizens, RiverWatchers provides equipment necessary to take action in the community and help improve water quality in the Ohio River.

To apply, visit our online application form. Participants select their own site along the Ohio River or a major tributary. Be sure to consider accessibility and travel time when selecting a site. All participants receive a field guide with general information and instructions for conducting the testing as well as a HACH Stream Survey kit, with which they can monitor eight parameters, including:

  • pH
  • water temperature change
  • dissolved oxygen
  • biochemical oxygen demand
  • total phosphates
  • nitrates
  • turbidity
  • E. coli

As long as the participant monitors at least five times each year and attends an introductory training session, they can keep the RiverWatchers testing kit. For more information, contact the RiverWatchers Coordinator at 513-231-7719.
