Proposed Federal Legislation Aims to Advance Ohio River Basin Restoration Efforts

We are witnessing an important moment for the Ohio River Basin, and ORSANCO is proud to be part of this movement. In light of this momentum, we’re sharing the announcement from Ohio River Basin Caucus Co-Chairs, U.S. Rep. Morgan McGarvey and Congresswoman Erin Houchin, regarding a federally supported effort to advance restoration of the Ohio River.

The proposed Ohio River Restoration Program Act would create a federal office within the Environmental Protection Agency to guide a coordinated restoration plan in partnership with states and local governments.

The Ohio River is a vital resource; fueling river town economies, providing drinking water, supporting commerce, recreation, and ecological health for millions across the Basin. It is a resource worth protecting and fighting for.

For more than 76 years, ORSANCO has served as the Basin’s trusted platform for:

  • Monitoring, assessing, and communicating water-quality conditions
  • Supporting spill response across the region
  • Problem-solving and collaborating with our member states and regional partners to protect vital resources of the Ohio River system and help improve water quality conditions
  • Increasing transparency and public access to water quality information

We are committed to science-based decision making, data transparency, and strong interstate collaboration across our eight member states—Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.

As discussions around federal investment continue, ORSANCO will remain a trusted scientific resource and regional partner, supporting efforts that strengthen the health and resilience of the Ohio River and the millions of people and communities who rely on it every day.
